Advent starts on Sunday 3 December 2017. This season of preparation for the coming of Christ is a wonderful opportunity to involve children in many of our Christian practices.

Advent intergenerational learning and relationship building
Mary and Joseph Journey to Bethlehem
This activity is a great way to share our faith and facilitate friendships across the ages. Mary and Joseph (knitted figurines in a basket – contact us for the pattern) have a long and uncomfortable journey to take from Nazareth to Bethlehem. And as Mary is pregnant with baby Jesus, they will need to rest a lot on their way. This resource provides ideas to help you organise people (of all ages) in your church to host Mary and Joseph for one night during Advent. This is a wonderful way to connect all ages and help children share the story and pray together with new friends as they visit to hand over Mary and Joseph to the next host. Christine Harrex, children’s ministry leader at Lawrene-Waitahuna sent us her adaptation of this resource to include all sorts of activities for the family to do when hosting Mary and Joseph. Download A Night with Mary and Joseph
A Progressive Christmas Story
This resource is shared with us by Hilltop Family Church, a Fresh Expression of intergeneratonal church planted by Flagstaff Community Church in Dunedin. Download A Progressive Christmas Story
In 2014 we shared the Christmas story with our Hilltop Family Church, through a three part progressive dinner. We hope it inspires you as you explore ways to share the Christmas story creatively with all ages.
Advent Intergenerational Events
Advent is a wonderful time to gather the whole church family to learn about and celebrate together the begin of Advent and anticipate and prepare for the coming of Jesus. Intergenerational events create opportunities of all of our church members to grow in faith and in relationship across the ages. The intergenerational even not only provides opportunities for faith sharing and learning but it provides resources, devotions and rituals for everyone to take home to use during the four weeks of Advent.
A Family Advent Celebration
Jane Davis of Kids Friendly Highgate Presbyterian Church, Dunedin has shared how they organised an intergenerational Advent event in 2009. Be inspired! Take some or all of these ideas to help your families anticipate and celebrate the hope, joy, peace and love of Christmas. Download A Family Advent Celebration
Highgate decorated their foyer with these Advent posters.

Advent Praying Together
We have created two prayers station resources for you. Prayer stations are wonderful ways to encourage all ages to pray together. Interactive multi-sensory experiences of the Christmas story are easy to create. Journey from station to station using indoors and outdoors, or place stations around your church sanctuary. Or you could place the stations at intervals on a prayer labyrinth.
